The particular view of Venice immortalised in our painting, with the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal and the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi seen from the front, is a painting derived from a print published by Luca Carlevaris in 1703*.

In particular, this print, which was part of a valuable collection entitled "Le fabriche e vedute di Venetia disegnate, poste in prospettiva et intagliate da Luca Carlevarijs" (Reale 1995), of over 100 depictions, was the starting point and fundamental model for Venetian vedutismo throughout the 18th century.

And so our composition, like countless other Venetian vedutas, was borrowed by the greatest painters of the 18th century, among them Marieschi, Canaletto and Bellotto for their spectacular canvases.

We see a magnificent view of the lagoon city, from a rather unusual perspective, with one of the city's symbolic monuments, the Rialto Bridge, crossing the waters of the Grand Canal, flanked by the imposing silhouette of the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, the former seat of the financial magistrates, as well as the prison - on the ground floor - for insolvent debtors.

Although it is difficult to identify the hand of our author with certainty, we can however see strong correspondences with the works of Gabriele Bella (Venice 1730 - 1799), one of the protagonists of the grandiose season of 18th century Venetian vedutismo.

Active throughout his career in Venice, Bella worked for a long time exclusively for the Giustiniani family, for whom he produced the series of ''Venetian Feasts''. In addition to these, there is a set of works that the painter executed for the rest of his patrons, a series of views in a more canonical style, depicting important places and buildings, and to which our painting may also belong.
