The proposed work, depicting a splendid coastal view made brilliant by the warm lights of sunset, presents the distinctive features typical of the compositions of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix, one of the most important landscape painters in 18th-century European painting and a specialist in depicting seascapes, and is therefore attributable to one of the many pupils and collaborators active in his atelier.

Versions very similar to our composition are found in the most important international museums and private collections, belonging to a large series of paintings that the master made, together with his collaborators, especially during his stay in Italy.

In fact, after his apprenticeship with Vernet in France, De Lacroix collaborated with the master several years in Rome, where he is documented until 1760, and thereafter he was certainly in Naples until 1776.

His marinas were very fashionable at the time, a genre favored by nobility from Britain and northern Europe who came to Italy on the Grand Tour and were sold as souvenirs of the trip. Often, therefore, they were not commissioned as mere decorative elements, but were meant to represent a gallery of images of the most significant places or views seen during their long sojourns.

The glimpse immortalized, though a figment of the author's imagination, is inspired by the picturesque Mediterranean coastline, with a castle perched and situated on a steep promontory just off the shore, enlivened by small, lively figures of fishermen with their moored boats. The clear sunlight, rosy clouds and calm surface of the harbor contribute to the harmonious and idyllic atmosphere of the work.

The painting is in excellent condition with a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame.
