In this sumptuous still life, we see a classical stone vase containing a fine floral bouquet of roses, carnations, tulips, peonies and lilies, resting on a stone shelf with a protruding rim, the flowers of which, well delineated and with a delicate colour scheme, display a remarkable descriptive power.

The work is, in our opinion, attributable, both in terms of time, style and quality of execution, to the hand of the Flemish painter Jacob van Huysum (Amsterdam, 1687 - London, 1746), a member of a dynasty of painters specialising in still life paintings; Founded in Amsterdam by his father Justus, their renowned workshop was made famous thanks to the skill of his elder brother Jan van Huysum (Amsterdam 1682 - Amsterdam 1749), considered to be the most famous still life painter active in the Netherlands in the early 18th century, an artist of international renown and in great demand even during his lifetime.

Specialising in floral still lifes recognisable by the elegant structure of the composition coupled with the characteristic freshness and brilliance of the colours, with the members of the 'Van Huysum' dynasty, the still life genre, which was already a spearhead of Dutch painting, reached unprecedented levels of naturalistic precision and compositional elegance. The workshop's clients included princes, crowned heads and wealthy private collectors, also from outside the Netherlands, such as the Duke of Orleans, William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and Sir Robert Walpole.

After a long training in the family workshop, he moved to England around 1720, where he not only brought with him the inheritance of his brother Jan's fame, but also soon acquired a reputation of his own, and in particular attracted the attention of the patron Sir Robert Walpole, working for his residence at Houghton Hall, producing numerous pictorial decorations there.

His most famous work is the series of twelve still lifes, each depicting a specific month of the year, now housed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (works from the series can be viewed from this link: https://collection.beta.fitz.ms/id/agent/agent-66371
