In this sumptuous still life we see a classical metal vase containing a fine bouquet of flowers including roses, carnations, tulips, peonies and lilies, resting on a stone shelf with a protruding rim, whose well-delineated and delicately coloured flowers display a remarkable descriptive elegance.

The work is, in our opinion, attributable to the Flemish painter Jacob van Huysum (Amsterdam 1687 - London 1746), a member of a dynasty of painters specialising in still life paintings. The Huysum workshop, founded by his father in Amsterdam, was made famous thanks to the skill of his elder brother Jan (Amsterdam 1682 - Amsterdam 1749), considered to be the most famous still life painter active in the Netherlands in the early 18th century, an artist of international renown and in great demand even during his lifetime.

Specialising in floral still lifes recognisable by the refined structure of the composition coupled with the characteristic freshness and brilliance of the colours, with the Van Huysums' style, the still life genre, which was already a spearhead of Dutch painting, reached unprecedented levels of naturalistic precision with a high degree of compositional elegance. Patrons of the workshop included princes, crowned heads and wealthy private collectors, also from outside the Netherlands, such as the Duke of Orleans, William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel and Sir Robert Walpole.

Initially active in the family studio in Amsterdam, he moved to England around 1720, where he not only brought with him the legacy of his brother's fame, but also soon acquired a reputation of his own, and in particular attracted the attention of the patron Sir Robert Walpole, working for his residence at Houghton Hall by producing numerous pictorial decorations.

His most famous work is the series of twelve still lifes, each depicting a specific month of the year, now housed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (this link shows the works in the series:(https://research.rkd.nl/nl/zoeken?q=Jacob%20van%20Huysum&size=n_14_n&filters%5B0%5D%5Bfield%....
