This magnificent canvas, large in size, offers us an exuberant composition of flowers that overflows from a precious classic vase in carved stone; the variegated floral cascade, with tulips, peonies, hydrangeas, roses, sunflowers and gentians, is described with an elegant sense of reality.

This triumph of flowers, which exhibits a significant descriptive force combined with the elegance of the movement of flowers, is placed on a stone surface and is flanked by a Persian carpet that embellishes the composition.

The work is a relevant addition to the catalog of the Flemish Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen the Younger (Antwerp, 1664 - 1730), one of the leading Dutch painters of floral still lifes between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and creator of elegant compositions in which he displays not only an extraordinary talent, but also a valid botanical knowledge.

Observing his compositions one is surprised both by their illustrative monumentality, and by the descriptive opulence of the corollas and the elegance of the pictorial touches. The canvas in question can be considered peculiar to his production and, despite a certain iconographic continuity, can be placed in the youthful phase of his production, still of seventeenth-century inspiration, basically with a monochrome background, hinged on strong chiaroscuro contrasts, distinguished chromatic brilliance and of course the usual executive quality.

As we can see by observing the painting in question, the counterpoint of the chromatic range accords the soft pinks of the roses, the delicate blues of the peonies and the bright reds of the anemones that emerge from the dark background and accentuate their lively chromatism.
The skill of the young Verbruggen is documented by the same biography, which sees him admitted to the Guild of San Luca at the age of twelve and where at 27 he already held the position of teacher.
