This large painting, depicting a famous view of Venice with the entrance to the Grand Canal and the majestic

Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute on the left, is a
work signed by F. Guarana, an Italian landscape painter active between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, who specialised in creating evocative views of the lagoon city.

Although very few documented details are known about his life, his signature appears on various works of art that have appeared on the antiques market and at international auction houses. He should not be confused with the famous 18th-century Venetian painters Jacopo Guarana and Vincenzo Guarana, exponents of the late Baroque and Neoclassical periods, from whom our painter is separated by more than a century in time, though he may be their direct descendant.

His works, which are characterised by an excellent command of perspective and a fine brushstroke rich in architectural detail, depict almost exclusively the most famous views of Venice, such as the Rialto Bridge, the Grand Canal, St Mark’s Basin and the Doge’s Palace.

In particular, the subject matter echoes one of the famous 18th-century compositions by the master of Venetian landscape painting, Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. Indeed, it is quite common to find in his paintings, such as the one presented here, motifs that were celebrated in the 18th century by masters of Venetian landscape painting such as the aforementioned Canaletto, or Marieschi and Bellotto.

The composition is characterised by a rigorous use of perspective and an analytical rendering of light that emphasises the architectural volumes – typical elements of the style of the great masters mentioned.

The canal is brought to life by characteristic vessels of the period, such as gondolas and cargo ships, whilst on the right the line of Venetian palaces overlooking the Grand Canal stands out.

The canvas, in good condition, is set in a sumptuous carved and gilded wooden frame featuring floral motifs and Baroque-style decorations at the corners and along the edges.
