An intense image of the face of Christ as the "Salvator Mundi," immortalized in a frontal pose, with a fixed gaze directed at the viewer, by a Flemish master active in the sixteenth or seventeenth century.

The expression is solemn and conveys an obvious protective, reassuring message, accentuated by the sense of hieraticity of the face, sublimated by the author through the use of a forcibly static pose and a frontal pose that follows an almost geometric rigor.

It is the most iconic Christian depiction, popularized by the great northern European masters of the 15th to 16th centuries, such as as Gerard David (https://allenartcollection.oberlin.edu/objects/15554/holy-face), Hans Memling, Gerard David or Dirk Bouts.

Private prayer was encouraged, and small works like this one were easily transportable and suitable for domestic use, responding to a spiritual trend that emphasized meditation and reflection on humanity and Christ's passion.

Although with human features, the transcendental nature, inherited from the Eastern icon tradition, is evident, the hypnotic and mysterious gaze enhanced by the powerful beam of light striking the features frontally.
