The work, of high decorative value and certainly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the moment of the supreme Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, an evangelical episode set here on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with spread wings, depicted with white lilies symbolizing purity, and the young Virgin kneeling before him, observing him as a sign of devotion.

Of great expressiveness is the detail of the lectern of the virgin, made with a particular carving that sees a winged female figure with bare breasts, as well as the skill with which the drapery of the garments were rendered, especially of the angel.

Observing the high-quality stylistic features, both from the point of view of compositional invention and from the point of view of execution, and the elegance, albeit simple, of the design, we are oriented towards bringing the area of origin closer to a painter of Neapolitan matrix between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the following century.

In particular, it easily approaches the stylistic outcome of Paolo De Matteis (Piano del Cilento, 1662 - Naples, 1728), Neapolitan of origin but who from 1682 to 1683 lived in Rome, a necessary experience given that in those years the artistic culture recorded a happy oscillation between a luminous baroque language, with Cortonese influences, and the overcoming of naturalism in the name of an adherence to the new style imported from Giordano.

Author who will mark the development of eighteenth-century Neapolitan art, his works have a strong narrative tone and a strong sentimental and emotional charge.

The characteristics of the canvas, for the treatment of light and of the figures, could trace the work back to the artist's classicist period, therefore right between the two centuries.
