This delightful pair of views depicting Venetian scenes, executed in oil on canvas with good pictorial quality, are works attributed to a painter who was presumably active in Venice between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are part of the Venetian tradition of landscape painting, recalling the style of illustrious examples by artists such as Canaletto, Marieschi and Guardi.
The two canvases can be attributed to a follower of Francesco Guardi (Venice, 1712 - 1793). The well-known Venetian artist's illustrative invention, free and vibrant rendering of small figures, and fluid use of colour, even in the creation of wide skies streaked with clouds, can all be traced back to him: all aspects that recall precise Guardi stylistic features.
The canvases are characterised by their light luminosity and delicate colour palette, highlighted by the contrast between light and shadow. It should be noted that, despite a compositional structure still linked to Canaletto, the atmospheric flaking, one of the artist's main characteristics, is already evident.
The first view of Venice shows the Rio dei Mendicanti, with the church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, one of the most imposing medieval churches in the city, often considered the “pantheon of Venice” due to the numerous burials of doges and illustrious figures, while in the background we see the Scuola Grande di S. Marco.
In the second view, we can admire one of the city's most important and iconic religious buildings, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, located in the Punta della Dogana area, dominating the panorama of St. Mark's Basin and the Grand Canal.
This second painting is inspired, in particular, by the same subject painted by Guardi, now in the National Gallery in London. https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/venice-the-punta-della-dogana-with-s-maria-della-salute-116153
