The present pendant of still lifes of flowers can be attributed to an exponent of the Lombard school of the second half of the 17th century and, given the stylistic and formal parallels, is akin to the hand of Margherita Caffi (Milan 1647-1710) and in particular to her 'first manner'.
As is typical in the painter's figurative repertoire, the works are both articulated around two groups of flowers, and executed with a certain painterly skill against a neutral, dark background. The canvases group together a vast sampling of flowers such as roses, anemones, tulips and narcissus, characterised by a vibrant luminosity and highlighted by the dark background.
The painting is characterised by an extreme freedom of pictorial drafting, an interweaving of free and brisk brush strokes with a loose hand, typical of her painting style.
The painter was born in Cremona in 1647, the daughter of the painter of French origin Vincenzo Volò, who was active in Lombardy in the 17th century. This family workshop was known as 'dei Vicenzini' and imposed its style from the middle of the 17th century until the first quarter of the 18th century, strongly influencing the taste of Milanese collectors for still life.
She then took on the surname of art when she married the Cremonese painter Ludovico Caffi at a young age, with whom she perhaps completed her training.
She was then also active in Tuscany, where she worked and lived around the 1780s under the patronage of the Medici, favoured by Vittoria Della Rovere, wife of Ferdinand II. Renowned and in demand throughout Europe, her patrons included the archdukes of Tyrol and the kings of Spain.
Towards the beginning of the 18th century, she moved permanently to Milan, where she set up a flourishing workshop, a leading player in the development of Baroque still life painting in Lombardy, knowing how to renew the figurative repertoire to satisfy the taste of Milanese collectors in the late 17th century.
