[...] With regard to this "architectural Capriccio" (oil painting on canvas, 92 x 70 cm), the Roman matrix of his inventiveness is evident , consisting of the interior of a building in imaginary ruin, from which emerge two round arches, still majestic and partly in ruins, resting on pairs of smooth columns composite capitals of complex and bizarre model, in which intertwine the different classical styles. The contrast between the large, well-preserved vase, directly inspired by famous models such as the "Ludovisi", and the architectural fragments, including an inverted capital in the lower right corner, completes the archaeological-ruinist exposure angle of the composition.
[...] It is clear that the author refers to the taste of Panini's inventions, which reached the top of the eighteenth century far beyond the borders of the Papal State, having not been excluded from his knowledge similar works of direct adherents of the maestro piacentino, or other specialists in the field who acted in advance or following him, such as Il Carlieri and Roberti, or the various Frenchmen at Servandoni, immediately exposed to light at In this respect, and who continued a speech in connection with that of "Capriccio" considered here.
The "Capriccio" also relies on a figurative animation and a landscape background in the light of the arc, which clearly bring to Van Bloemen - the figures and backgrounds are the same in many of his paintings and almost the same in that attributed to his studio (see Busiri Vici, Jan Frans van Bloemen "Horizon" and the origin of the eighteenth-century Roman landscape, Bozzi ed., Rome 1974, Fig. 319 and passim)
