[...] With regard to this "architectural Capriccio" (oil painting on canvas, 92 x 70 cm), the Roman matrix of his inventiveness is evident , consisting of the interior of a building in imaginary ruin, from which emerge two round arches, still majestic and partly in ruins, resting on pairs of smooth columns composite capitals of complex and bizarre model, in which intertwine the different classical styles. The contrast between the large, well-preserved vase, directly inspired by famous models such as the "Ludovisi", and the architectural fragments, including an inverted capital in the lower right corner, completes the archaeological-ruinist exposure angle of the composition.

Pierre-Antoine Demachy is a French painter born September 17, 1723 in Paris and died September 10, 1807. Active in the second half of the eighteenth century, he specializes in paintings of architectural ruins, trompe-l'oeil and especially in the views of Paris, where he gives free rein to his creativity and daring. He was the ancestor of the banker Charles Adolphe Demachy (1818-1888).
